Dancer Rama Vaidyanathan , recipient of the Sanskriti award has been hailed as one of the brightest stars of the new generation of Bharat Natyam dancers. Trained initially by Guru Yamini Krishnamurthi and later by Smt. Saroja Vidyanathan, Rama is faithful to the strictest canons of Bharat Natyam, while pushing the frontiers of her art in a creative and authentic manner. Consequently she straddles the traditional and creative dimension of dance with the same commitment to excellence, perfection, enthusiasm and energy. Frequently performing at cutting-edge and prestigious venues and dance festivals in India , Rama has also won over audiences in almost very continent in the world. Her tours to Latin American countries, Japan , Sri Lanka , Norway , France Spain, and United States of America , have all built her image as the dancer in the vanguard. It has also given her the confidence of dealing with demanding and knowledgeable Indian audiences, as well as responding to the challenge of international audiences. Rama recognizes that in today’s world a dancer must also be an effective interlocutor. Her paper on “The Living Mudra” at the Indira Gandhi Center for the Arts was well received .As an effective speaker with a mind dealing with issues in dance and around it, Rama approaches her work with a sense of artistic integrity and social responsibility.
